Academy for Blasting and Explosives Technology

ACADEMY FOR EXPLOSIVES AND BLASTING TECHNOLOGY

BACKGROUND

The “Academy for Blasting and Explosives Technology” (ABET), was founded in 2005 to provide professional training seminars, ongoing blaster education and research in the field of explosives and blasting.  The training facility is located in Northeast Ohio, east of Cleveland, near Montville, Ohio.

The Academy will provide both seminars and also longer term courses training in various aspects of blasting for the Mining and Construction Industry.  Introductory blasting seminars for new people in the industry as well as advanced blasting training programs in “specialty” areas in specific subjects are available.

SEMINARS AVAILABLE

“ROCK BLASTING AND OVERBREAK CONTROL”

DESCRIPTION: The updated seminar and book (Ed 4, 2008) of the former Federal Highways Administrations “Rock Blasting and Overbreak Control Seminar,” is now available.  This seminar is a guide to efficient blast design and vibration control for heavy construction, mining and quarrying projects. The fourth edition was updated for 2008 technology by Dr. Calvin Konya, one of the original authors of the first edition.  This seminar provides current technology on blasting, vibration control, and new revised blasting specifications for surface blast design projects.  Rock Blasting and Overbreak Control is a must for anyone in DOT, FHWA, USACE or anyone in the blasting industry interested in practical, effective methods and procedures.

“EFFECTIVE QUARRY BLASTING METHODS”

Does your company do its own blasting or do you rely totally on shot service from another company?  Ask yourself if the quarry has any of the concerns listed below.

Does the breakage or sizing need improvement?
Are the quarry walls torn up?
Is the quarry floor level?
Are costs too high?
Are blast vibrations disturbing the neighbors?

If the answer is yes to any of the above questions then join us for this seminar.  Don’t settle for the common excuses of geology causing all your problems. We can help train your management personnel to reduce or eliminate the problems.

“SAFETY FOR BLASTING AND EXPLOSIVES USE”

Description:  The seminar will teach participants how to safely work with explosives.  The seminar coves the use of explosives, initiators, primers and prevention of premature explosions.   The seminar will discuss proper safe blasthole loading methods.  Methods and causes of flyrock, vibration damage and airblast damage will also be reviewed.  The topics will be illustrated with actual case histories given.

This seminar is a “must attend” for all DOT, FHWA, BLM, construction contractor and quarry and mining personnel responsible for the blast design and wall on blasting projects.  Instructor is Mickey Bradley.

OTHER SEMINARS

The Academy can present other seminars that deal with drilling and blasting, blasting geology, regulations and blasting safety.  These seminars can be of any duration.  For example, some clients need a two- day seminar to get PDU continuing education credits for professional engineering licenses or PDU continuing education credits for blasting license renewal.  We can tailor a seminar to meet your needs.

Some past seminars have been taught on subjects such as:

Introduction to Blasting
Underwater Blasting
Blasting Concrete
Vibration And Airblast Control
Blasting in Open Pit Mines
Blasting for the Chemical Lime Industry
Delay Timing Methods for Optimum Fragmentation
Delay Timing Methods for Minimizing Vibration

SEMINARS AT YOUR FACILITY

We have taught seminars at clients' facilities in the USA and also in many foreign countries.  We can work with you to tailor a seminar to meet your needs.  Our associates are well versed in blasting practices around the world.  The associates of the Academy have a total combined experience of over 200 years.

INDUSTRY USE OF FACILITY

The Academy is also open to those in the blasting, mining, or construction industry for professional meetings, workshops, or other activities.  Contact us for details.  All those in the industry are welcome to share in the use of this unique facility.

SERVICES OFFERED BY ACADEMY ASSOCIATES

The associates of the Academy have can work with companies in many different ways.   We can help in estimating project costs, help manage blasting operations, trouble shooting, explosives and blasting research as well as training and education.

Discounts are available for government employees and multiple participants from the same company.  Registration will be accepted on a first-come, first served basis.  Early registration is recommended since the seminar size is limited.  The registration fee covers lectures, reference materials and lunch.  ABET reserves the right to cancel the seminar one week prior to the seminar in the event that insufficient interest is shown.

ACADEMY ASSOCIATES AND INSTRUCTORS

The following associates of the Academy are available to instruct seminars or courses at the academy or at your facility.  These individuals are also available for consulting services to industry
